Step-by-Step Measuring Instructions

1

Draw a Rough Sketch

Start by drawing a bird's-eye view of your kitchen. Include all walls, doorways, windows, and any architectural features. Don't worry about perfect lines - this is just a guide.

Tips:

  • Use graph paper if available (1 square = 1 inch works well)
  • Mark which direction is North for reference
  • Note the location of light switches and outlets
2

Measure Wall Lengths

Measure each wall at counter height (about 36" from the floor). Measure from corner to corner, including any bump-outs or recesses.

Tips:

  • Measure each wall at least twice to confirm
  • Round to the nearest 1/8 inch
  • Note if walls are not perfectly square
3

Measure Ceiling Height

Measure from the floor to the ceiling in multiple locations. Older homes often have variations in ceiling height.

Tips:

  • Measure in at least 3 spots per room
  • Note the lowest measurement - cabinets must fit here
  • Check for soffits or bulkheads above current cabinets
4

Locate Windows and Doors

For each window and door, measure the width, height, and distance from floor, ceiling, and nearest corner.

Tips:

  • Measure window openings, not trim
  • Note which way doors swing
  • Include distance from corner to start of trim
5

Mark Appliance Locations

Note the location and size of all appliances: refrigerator, range/cooktop, dishwasher, microwave, and any others.

Tips:

  • Measure the actual appliance dimensions
  • Note if you plan to upgrade to larger appliances
  • Mark electrical outlets and gas lines
6

Locate Plumbing

Mark the center of your sink drain, water supply lines, and any other plumbing connections.

Tips:

  • Measure from the corner to center of drain
  • Note if plumbing can be moved or must stay
  • Mark garbage disposal and dishwasher connections
7

Check for Obstructions

Identify anything that might affect cabinet installation: pipes, ducts, electrical panels, or structural elements.

Tips:

  • Look above current cabinets for hidden items
  • Check for radiators or HVAC vents
  • Note any pipes that run along walls
8

Take Photos

Photograph your kitchen from multiple angles. These help designers understand your space and identify details you might miss.

Tips:

  • Take wide shots of each wall
  • Photograph corners and tight spaces
  • Capture close-ups of any problem areas

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Forgetting to measure soffits
Always measure the depth and height of any soffits or bulkheads above cabinets.
Not checking if walls are square
Use the 3-4-5 triangle method: measure 3 feet along one wall, 4 feet along the other, and the diagonal should be 5 feet.
Measuring only once
Measure each dimension at least twice. If numbers differ, measure a third time.
Ignoring floor level
Place a level on the floor to check for slopes. Uneven floors affect cabinet installation.
Forgetting electrical and plumbing
Mark all outlets, switches, and plumbing connections. These affect cabinet placement.
